This morning we headed to the Dr. for
Adalynn's 9 month checkup. We saw Kelly, a nurse
practitioner. Kelly is so sweet. She is actually one of my mom's friends. Our gal weighed 22 lb 13 oz. (She weighed 23 lb 3 oz a couple of weeks ago, but that was fully clothed and with a wet diaper.) :) She was 28.5 inches long. 95
th percentile for weight and 90
th for height if I remember correctly.
I was given a
questionnaire to fill out about
Adalynn's development. It had all kinds of questions. Gross motor, fine motor, speech, and social skills. Kelly asked me how she was doing. I said great, but mentioned she is still not crawling or pulling up on her own. She took a look at my
questionnaire. In the gross motor section, I was able to answer 2 out of 5 questions with a yes. She told me that this would fall into the "refer to First Steps category." For those who aren't familiar with First Steps, (I'm not really either, but know a little) it's a service provided to Indiana families with children ages 6mos-3 years. They come out to your house, assess your child in the area of concern. In Addy's case, it would be her gross motor skills. They would see if it was an actual concern, then begin developmental therapy if they qualify. They also work with mom and dad, teaching them techniques.
Kelly told me to work with
Adalynn for a week on pulling up and crawling. If I don't notice an improvement, she said to go ahead and give First Steps a call. She told me that she thinks she's fine, but early intervention is key.
So, needless to say, I'm a little concerned at this point. I'm trying not to get too upset though. I know of plenty of babies who didn't crawl until 9 or 10 months old. I also know that there are babies who don't crawl at all. My brother and I never crawled. I still do think
Adalynn is kind of just a lazy baby. :) She's pretty content sitting on the floor playing with toys or being held. She doesn't really see a reason to crawl anywhere, I don't think.
As far as fine motor skills (picking things up with her fingers) and speech, she is doing excellent. She says mama,
dada, and bye bye. She's doing great socially too.
So, I'm going to take Kelly's advice and really work with
Adalynn this week on pulling up and crawling. I told Jenna that it will be like baby boot camp. :) Just kidding though!
Deep down, I think she is just fine. I don't think she has any type of a delay. I really do think she's just slow and steady. Mommy's little laid back girl. :)
